"A sketchbook is a secret thing, a collection of unfinished and often times abandoned ideas never intended for public consumption—at least not in their current state. It’s a private space for honing one’s craft and workshopping, separating good ideas from those best left unexplored." -Brian Heater at The Daily Cross Hatch.

Riding the Shaft: Preliminary Sketch

This is a rough quick preliminary sketch for my next undertaking (suggested by a former sailor, machinist and fine art devotee, CB)... Machinist Mates "Riding the (propeller) Shaft"...Don't get caught...don't get hurt... Anyone in blogland ever do this for real?

  1. Reminds me of the bamboo pole climbing contest. The bamboos are positioned vertically and coated with oil. Propeller shaft riding seems easier in comparison.

  2. Don't really know if I'd do either!
Anyone out there have experience with both?

  3. My first trip on a ship- an old steam tanker, and we were chipping and painting the engine room double bottoms- riding the shaft was our entertainment when the ship was on dead slow or slow ahead. We never did get caught, but the oilers bitched about the handprints on the shaft, and the engineer told us in no uncertain terms to knock that shit off.

  4. Hard to hide the evidence of the crime!...anyone ever ride it at a speed faster than slow ahead?

  5. A machinist was machining a prop shaft on a lathe when his nylon shirt sleeve wrapped round the rough prop shaft and he had to ride it for several revs until the lathe could be shut down, this was in the 1970's.
